Bring first three ingredients and 1/4 teaspoon of salt to a boil in a large Dutch oven; reduce heat and simmer mixture for 5 minutes.
Combine remaining ½ teaspoon salt to and next 4 ingredients in a medium bowl; stir just enough milk until blended dough is thick.
Drop dough by the tablespoonfuls onto hot blackberry mixture.
Bake at 400 degrees for 35 minutes or until golden. Serve with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream if desired.
Beat whipping cream with electric mixer at medium speed till foamy. Blend in 2 tablespoons of sugar and 2 dashes of vanilla extract slowly and until soft peaks form.
Yield: About 6 servings with preparation time of 20 minutes and 45 minutes cooking time.
